About the establishment
In line with the tradition of the Rule of St. Benedict, the Schottenstift has run a guesthouse since 1980. It forms part of the historical Benedictine abbey complex and is therefore also to be found on the Freyung in Vienna’s city centre.
Although centrally situated in the midst of Vienna’s bustle, its 21 rooms distributed across four floors offer the tranquility you might expect from a monastery. This is partly thanks to its location (all rooms face the inner courtyard and are therefore extremely peaceful) but also thanks to its furnishings. We have made a conscious decision not to equip our rooms with TVs or radios – the quietude of the establishment is broken only by the chimes of the Schottenkirche (Church of the Scots).
All guests are warmly invited to join us at the Schottenkirche devine services. We also have our own chapel on the first floor of the guesthouse, which guests are welcome to visit too.

We also recommend a visit to the museum in the Schottenstift which is home to the famous Schottenaltar panels (as a guest of the Benediktushaus, you are entitled to 50 % off the admission price) and the the monastery shop (Benediktushaus guests get a 10 % discount on all products.)
The church bells begin ringing at 6 a.m. and then ring every 15 minutes until 10p.m. . This regular ringing serves as a time signal and helps to structure the daily routine. At the same time, it reminds us of the Christian tradition and the community’s connection throughout the day.
